This just in: fashion people still prefer skinny

I really enjoyed this article today in the NYT. I get bored at work occasionally (no, seriously), and the Times is usually where I end up, so I’ve run across Cathy Horyn’s articles before. I was surprised and weirdly grateful to read an article from her with such a personal tone. The article doesn’t stand out so much for it’s discussion of weight in fashion, which has been discussed ad nauseum without ever affecting the general attitudes of the fashion industry, but does an excellent job of discussing the role of the outsider in the fashion world. In fact, it seems impossible to participate without feeling like an outsider. One of the greatest paradoxes of the “in” crowd is how insecure its select few members seem to feel.

I also enjoyed reading about Ms. Horyn’s entry into fashion journalism. I always like finding out how people end up in positions I envy, and I have to admit relating somewhat to her closing statement: “New York: it sounded good to me.”

Birthday Party!

You should come. You should bring a date.

When: Friday, June 10
Where: 2404 Forest Dr., Des Moines, IA
How to get there: Oh, wow, this is a hard one. They keep messing with the exits on 235. Basically, you need to get onto Grand somehow and find the vacant Medicap by the Governor’s mansion. Going west on 235, you will get off on the Keo Way exit, turn left on Keo Way and go to University. Take a left on University, go to Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway, and take a left on MLK. Take a left on Ingersoll, immediate right on 19th, and a right on Grand. 2404 Forest Dr. is a house just behind the vacant Medicap which has a conveniently empty parking lot. Go around to the back of the house, climb the wooden stairs, and have a good time.

See you there,
Cedric

[edit] Okay the “go to University” part up there is a little easier to miss than I let on. I took this route last night and figured out at the last minute that Keo Way goes under University. There is an exit off of Keo to the right if you want to go to University, otherwise just stay left and eventually you will get to MLK directly. If you get lost, call me. [/edit]

I’m a geek

I just opened the Blonde Redhead CD I bought this weekend, In an Expression of the Inexpressible, and the first thing I noticed was the song title “speed x distance = time”, which is wrong. You see, speed = distance / time, which means that distance / speed = time. I need to listen to this CD and find out if there is an ironic meaning to this incorrect mathematical formula. Also, I need to stop being such a dork. I love Blonde Redhead.

And that’s when I thought the world was ending

It happened right about the time I was getting out of the shower, dripping wet and naked, cold, exposed, the usual morning. There are windows all around my bathroom, so I usually try to stick close to the shower stall which is mostly hidden from view. Wrapping a towel around myself, I began to move toward the sink, which happens to be right under a long bank of these windows, when suddenly the world began to end. Or a jet was flying in way too low. Or a volcanic mudslide was covering the attic. Or the giant old white oak outside my window was crashing into the roof.

Yes, that was it. I saw massive amounts of green leaves lean in, and realized that most of what was coming off the tree was landing right over my head. I backed away from the windows, a little worried that the roof might cave in and a lot worried that the windows might be smashed. In the end, nothing really happened. The branch landed on a dumpster, leaving behind several smaller twigs and leaves to prove that it had, in fact, landed on my roof, as well as a quivering but intact power line to the house. Good thing that dumpster wasn’t my car.

Holy crap

Party in the attic!

Friedrich Rentals called me yesterday and told me that someone wants to move into my Ames apartment on June 11. That is good news. I was already planning a housewarming/birthday party for Friday the 10th, which will be my official last day in possession of the Ames apartment, so that is conveniently symbolic and stuff. Of course, now I need to finish the whole moving process, which takes me longer than most. Most things take me longer than most. Whatever. So I need to totally clean the apartment in Ames, fix my motorcycle and get it out of the garage, and organize my new place to get it party ready. All of this needs to happen in about two weeks. So I if I don’t want to hang out with you, you’ll know why. I still like you, and you are still invited to the party. Which will be awesome. Trust me.
