I’m freaked out

What’s freaking me out is simple enough. Derek and Kari have each posted blogs about journal entries they wrote in elementary school. My friend Kerry posted stories on Myspace that she and her sister wrote as children. Finally, Heather passed on one of those Myspace chain bulletins that recapped what she was doing five years ago (she was seventeen.)

My question is this: have we reached the age where we are starting to reminisce? Are we starting to say things like, “Remember how cool it was to be an eight-year-old?” I mean, I read Dandelion Wine, and it was a pretty good book, but Ray Bradbury sure as heck did better with his other stories. I’m freaked out because suddenly the 80s are retro, G.I. Joes and Transformers are selling at a brisk pace, and 8-bit Nintendo games are making people all gushy.

I just don’t think I’m the type of person to say, “Remember how cool the 5th grade was?” I hated 5th grade. Last week, though, was pretty decent. This week might be shaping up just fine, too. And if the stupid Smithson bars keep playing music I got sick of during my childhood, I’m going to continue throwing up when I walk by them. Enough, already.

UPDATE: Looks like Berkleigh passed the bulletin on.

  1. i document everything… so, nothing abnormal here. other people, such as kari, just appreciate the humor in their old journals.

    dude, young jeezy is HOT!

  2. Welcome to adulthood!

  3. I think Elmo is summing up my issue very nicely, here. Nothing against the people who are mentioned in this post, I’m just saying, I don’t want to be some old person hanging out in a bar that plays Nirvana or, worse yet, Hootie and the Blowfish.

  4. I say listen to nirvana AND young jeezy (or whatever is new). Its not that the old stuff got bad… Its that its not “cool” to listen to things like nirvana because they’re halfway between new and old. People like johnny cash are cool and white stripes are cool because they are old enough or current enough…. but everything in between sucks? Just look at 80s music and how awesome it is again.

I think ipods are so nice because you can still listen to all your old music along with all your new stuff.

    In with the new! and….
    …. Keep the old around?

There’s no way to make that sound cool.

  5. I think it is fine to listen to whatever you want to. I’m still a sucker for Smashing Pumpkins CDs that came out when I was in junior high, and a lot of eighties music is just really good. <3 Jesus and Mary Chain.

Just consider for a moment why the eighties are suddenly cool again. My suspicion is that people who grew up during the eighties have suddenly acquired enough money to be a market force, and appealing to their nostalgia is good business. That is why you have bars where people dance to “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Good song, but come on.

It seems like every generation reaches a point where forward movement becomes unappealing, and we forget to look for new things to like. People find it comfortable to look backward, and as a result, they find themselves forgetting to buy new clothes and feeling “out-of-touch” with their kids.

See, Derek, you can be exempt because you are never having kids 😉

  6. Haha, word.
